Description

Led by Jeffery Sun Young Park, LMFT

August 9, 16, 23 & 30

4 sessions meeting every Friday from 10am-1pm

Join artist, educator and therapist, Jeffery Sun Young Park, in a guided series to cultivate a personal creative practice through building ceramic sculptures. Over the four sessions, participants will explore different handbuilding techniques including coils, slabs and using molds to create personal pieces. Each session will consist of class dialogue, group clay time, individual practice and creation time.

Students will learn about drying time and its integral role in assembling sculptural pieces. Jeff will teach building in parts, utilizing templates and molds, techniques for piecing parts together, clean up and finishing. With Jeff's guidance and support, participants will begin creating the steps towards planning and prepping before creation time. In-between classes participants will have the opportunity to sketch and think of ideas. It's encouraged that participants come into class with a few ideas of pieces they would like to make and a sketch book.

This session is designed for those with prior ceramics experience who would like to expand their creative practice. It is recommended that participants have prior experience with handbuilding and a basic understanding of working with the material including the different stages of clay; greenware, bisqueware and glazeware. This workshop is well suited for those who may be experiencing burn out or isolation in their creative practice and are seeking a place to connect and learn new approaches to working with clay and reinstalling a sense of playfulness.

Throughout the duration of the course, participants will be given clay to work with at home in order to practice and develop ideas outside of class time. Basic tools and materials are included. All pieces will be fired to cone 5, the final class will be focused on glazing and all pieces will be ready for pick up within 3 weeks of the final session.

This workshop will take place at Sooki Studio in Frogtown, 2971 Allesandro Street, Los Angeles, 90039.

Sliding Scale Pricing

Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable.

There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.

The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings.

There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for. An interest free payment plan is available for all workshops, breaking the workshop cost down to smaller payments over a longer period of time.

We do our best to ensure workshops are accessible and affordable. We are continuously improving our pricing system, please reach out if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share.

Cancellation Policy

Workshops are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the workshop you may transfer your spot to another person, please confirm with the studio when doing so.

Accessibility

The workshop space is ADA accessible. A bathroom is available for workshop participants that has a set of 3 stairs leading to it that is not currently ADA accessible. For any specific needs or additional questions on accessibility, please reach out
