Description

6-weeks on Tuesdays from 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Dates: April 4, 11, 18, 25 + May 9 & 16

*No class on May 2nd

This workshop is a continuation of Intro to Handbuilding and for those with prior experience with clay who would like to expand their hand building skills within focused, instructional and communal studio time.

In this workshop we will explore more advanced hand building techniques including large scale coil building, slab construction, trimming, carving, surface decoration, finishing and glazing. Students will receive 1 on 1 instruction time within class to develop ideas and bodies of work. Each week different techniques will be covered based on participants interests and experience.

Weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be dedicated to making pieces, week 5 will focus on surface decoration and week 6 will be for glazing pieces. Throughout the duration of the course, participants will be given clay to work with at home in order to practice, develop ideas and technique outside of class time.

Tools, clay and a selection of glazes will be provided. All work will be fired to mid-fire cone 5 and all glazed pieces will be dishwasher and microwave safe. This workshop will take place at Sooki Studio located in East Los Angeles, 15 minutes east of Downtown.

Sliding Scale Pricing

Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. I use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable to all.

There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.

The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing me to create more affordable offerings.

Instructor

This workshop is taught by Sooki Studio founder, Natalia Ira Sookias. Natalia has been teaching over the last decade from the kindergarten level ranging to university graduate students in the US, Europe and the Middle East. She studied at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Central St. Martin's and the Prince's School for Traditional Arts in London.  Click here to learn more about her educational offerings or get in touch with any questions.

Cancellation Policy
Workshops are non-refundable, if you do need to cancel I will try my best to fill the spot, in which case I can offer a refund, however this is not guaranteed. If you are unable to attend the workshop you may transfer your spot to another person.

COVID Protocol
I ask that everyone do at home Covid tests prior to the workshop to ensure collective safety. As we're working in a very well ventilated environment, masks are optional. If you are experiencing any Covid like symptoms or have been exposed to someone with Covid, I ask you to please stay home and get in touch so that we can schedule a make-up session.
