Health, Safety & Accessibility

To help keep our space safe, masks (N95 or KN95) are required for all workshops. Please bring your own—extras are available at the studio. Masks protect against airborne illness as well as clay and glaze dust.

Our property is ADA accessible, with a ramp available for the bathroom (3 steps). On-site parking and other accommodations are available—email us with any needs: info@sooki.studio.

Sliding Scale Pricing

Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable.

There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.

The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings.

There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for. An interest free payment plan is available for all workshops, breaking the workshop cost down to smaller payments over a longer period of time.

We do our best to ensure workshops are accessible and affordable. We are continuously improving our pricing system, please reach out if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share.

Cancellation Poilcy

Workshops are non-refundable, but you may transfer your spot to someone else—just let us know in advance.

Join artist Yaeun Stevie Choi for a hands-on kite-making workshop rooted in cultural practice, collective care, and creative resistance. Since 2018, Stevie has been researching, building, and teaching kite-making as a form that explores regional artistry, play, freedom, and a reclaiming of the sky in the face of its privatization and militarization.

This workshop is conceived and co-hosted by artist Evelyn Serrano, who has been working with the Lebanese-Palestinian kite form as a gesture of solidarity, including the creation of a kite honoring Palestinian poet and educator Refaat Alareer and the liberation of the Palestinian people. In this iteration, participants are invited to create kites in support of Palestine, Lebanon, and other communities impacted by war, violence, and displacement—reflecting on the role of the U.S. in these global realities.

Participants will learn to construct a Lebanese-Palestinian-style kite that will be completed and ready to fly by the end of the session. The workshop will culminate in an invitation to gather as a collective and fly these kites at the upcoming Clockshop Kite Festival at LA State Historic Park on May 9, from 2–6 pm. Together, we will lift messages of remembrance, resistance, and hope into the sky.

RSVP for the Clockshop Kite Festival here.

Instructor

Yaeun Stevie Choi (they/she) is an artist based in Koreatown, Los Angeles, who have been making, researching, and holding workshops on kites since their interest began in 2018.

They believe building kites can represent appreciation for regional artistry, play and freedom, and resistance against the privatization and militarization of the sky. Choi dedicates their kitemaking knowledge to a group of kite masters on an online Korean kitemakers forum, Youtubers, and kitemaking friends here in Los Angeles.

They have facilitated or co-facilitated kite workshops with LACMA with Dajin Yoon, Clockshop, HOLA (Hearts of LA), Frieze London x Getty PST Art with Candice Lin, BVCLT (Beverly-Vermont Community Land Trust), Feminist Center for Creative Work with Silvi Naçi, and various schools and libraries. Choi was the Commissioned Kite Artist for Clockshop’s 4th Annual Community & Unity People's Kite Festival. They hold a B.A. from UCLA.
