Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable.
There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.
The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings.
There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for. An interest free payment plan is available for all workshops, breaking the workshop cost down to smaller payments over a longer period of time.
We do our best to ensure workshops are accessible and affordable. We are continuously improving our pricing system, please reach out if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share.
Workshops are non-refundable, but you may transfer your spot to someone else—just let us know in advance.

In this two-part workshop, we’ll explore ceramic forms designed to hold and interact with light, creating a one-of-a-kind functional table lamp.
Over two focused studio sessions, students will learn foundational handbuilding techniques including coil building, while considering proportion, form, and how a ceramic object changes when illuminated. The extended format gives us plenty of time to build thoughtfully during the first session and return to our pieces once they are leather hard to trim, refine, and finish them during the second.
Rather than rushing through the making process, this workshop is designed to give you time to focus on the ceramic form itself.
We’ll begin by looking at the basic anatomy and construction of a table lamp and discussing how different ceramic forms interact with light.
Students will then design and handbuild their own lamp base using coil building and other handbuilding techniques. We’ll consider scale, proportion, openings, hardware placement, and the relationship between the ceramic base and its eventual lampshade.
You’ll also choose the lamp hardware that will accompany your finished piece.
We’ll return to our pieces at the leather-hard stage, giving us time to trim, carve, alter, and refine the forms before firing.
This second session allows us to slow down and pay attention to the details that can be difficult to resolve in a single making session—from cleaning up edges and adjusting proportions to adding texture and finishing the surface.
All ceramic work must be completed during the two scheduled workshop sessions.
The standard workshop focuses on unglazed fired clay, allowing the natural surface, texture, and color of the material to remain visible and keeping the emphasis on form.
After the workshop, Sooki Studio will fire and professionally wire each lamp. There is no separate wiring session—you’ll return approximately four to six weeks later to pick up your finished, functional lamp.
Each registration includes clay, firing, a basic lamp hardware set, and professional wiring for one lamp.

Students who would like to further customize their lamp can choose from two optional upgrades:

Twisted antique style fabric cord + dimmable brass socket.
Studio Glazed Finish +$60
Choose from a curated selection of Sooki Studio glazes. We’ll glaze and fire your piece for you before wiring.
Premium hardware and glazing can also be combined.
Students will need to provide their own lampshade.
Ceramics experience is recommended but not required.
The workshop is designed to accommodate newer makers while giving students with previous handbuilding experience plenty of room to develop a more ambitious form.

This workshop is led by Sooki Studio founder Natalia Ira Sookias, who has over a decade of teaching experience—from kindergarten to graduate students—across the U.S. and Europe. She studied at CalArts, Central Saint Martins, and the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London.
